Possible Password Bug.

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,

For some reason this appears to be my week to find bugs. In addition to the possible bug I reported in the Reports thread, I just came across another.

It appears that Fund Manager will open without a password. Here are the steps I took that allowed me to open a portfolio without a password:

1. I launch FM from its icon.
2. The first screen that appears is a Password Required dialog, with one of my investments name and symbol appearing in parenthesis.
3. At this point, instead of entering a password I click Cancel All.
4. A message box appears that says "Password protected investment was not opened" followed by its location. My only option at this point is to click OK.
5. Another message box appears inquiring "Would you like to cancel opening the portfolio?". My only options are to click on Yes or No.
6. When I click No, the portfolio opens as if a password has been entered.

I hope you're able to duplicate this problem.

Thanks.

Hi aviator,

I couldn't reproduce this bug. Are you sure that the other investments that opened were password protected? It sounds like you may have only some of your investments password protected. Note, the password protection is done at the investment level, not at the portfolio level. If you have some investments password protected, and some that aren't, when you do those steps you described, only the non-protected investments should open. You can verify this by looking at "Investment Properties... / Password" after you open the portfolio to see if the password is enabled on these investments. Note also that you can apply a password to all your investments from here. Just make sure to select "Apply to All Open Investments" before applying the changes.

To quickly look at the password setting for all your investments, add "Password" to the Portfolio Editor list view, or create a Custom report with the "Password enabled" field.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark, you're right, some -- but not all -- of my investments are password protected. Worse, those that are protected are also hidden. Since all my visible investments (i.e. those that aren't hidden) weren't protected, it gave the appearance that the entire portfolio was visible without a password.

So the solution is for me to password protect all my investments. Is there a quick and easy way to do this globally?

Edit: Disregard the last question. I found the "quick and easy" way to password protect all investments: Right click *any* investment, click properties, click on the password tab. Enter password twice as directed. Check off Enable field, Check off Apply To All Open Investments, click OK.
