General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby realbg » Fri Jan 29, 2010 12:55 am

Hello,
My questions are about main screen.

1) Month-to-date and Year-to-date column
Is there any way to show month-to-date and year-to-date returns of each positions? I looked through "List Columns..." option, but all I could find was
Yield 1m or Yield 1yr type of columns. I guess these are calendar period of 1 month and 1 year and are not what I am looking for.

2) Foreign stocks
I have quite a few of foreign stocks. I found that if I activate "Exchange rate adjusted" function, then it converts all prices into the base currency I selected. Is it possible to show Price information in local currency while showing Value and % Portfolio in one base currency?

3) Investment arrangement by strategy
Often I buy multiple stocks or combination of stocks and options to play one strategy. Could you please advise me a what is the best way to keep records? Should I crate one sub-porfolio per strategy and book detail of investment instruments under the sub-porfolio?

Basically, my question is, let's assume that I am bullish on Google. So, I buy Google call options and Google stocks. At the same time I short some Microsoft stocks and I bought put options on Nokia. These are 4 different trades but essentially one position.

What is the best way to keep the book to make it easy for me to keep track of this position (not trades)? Should I create "Google" sub-portfolio and book these holdings under the sub-portfolio?

4) Viewing all portfolios open
Currently when I select Master Portfolio, the sub portolios are shown only as a folder icon. If I click the folder icon, then I can see only the sub-porfolio's positions. Is it possible to see all portolios (master or sub) in one screen with something like Microsoft Excel's Group/Ungroup function?

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi realbg,

I assume by "main screen" you are referring to the "Portfolio Editor".

1) You can only choose from the fields listed under "View / List Columns...". For more options, you can use Reports, and choose a ROI (btw) yield, and then set your date range(s) to what you want.

2) Everything is always consistent, in either the "default" currency, or in the native assigned currency. You cannot have a mixture. There is a tutorial on multiple currencies here:

http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/tuto ... video.html

3) You could either organize your strategies by sub-portfolio, or you could use the "asset type" categories. You define your own categories, so you could put all investments for a certain strategy into an asset type you've defined. You can report by asset type. See "Options / Category Labels...". You could experiment with either method and decide what works best for you. Both would work.

4) I'm not familiar with that feature in Excel. You can display all your sub-portfolios on the left. Just open them up by selecting the "+" icon to the left of the folder name. Whatever you have selected on the left will have its contents displayed on the right.
Thanks,
Mark

Thank you for your reply. I would like to clarify one thing.

Do you mean that I can only open 1 sub-portfolio at a time? Is there any way to display multiple sub-portolio all at the same time in on Portfolio Editor along with other positions in master portfolio?

Thank you.

Hi realbg,

You can have an unlimited number of sub-portfolios open at any time. You can have as much hierarchy as you want in your sub-portfolios. If you want to view everything in the Master Portfolio, select it on the left side. All investments and sub-portfolios directly in the Master Portfolio will be displayed on the right.

The left side of the Portfolio Editor is a "tree view", and you can show all the hierarchy of all your sub-portfolios at once in there. To open up a sub-portfolio that contains other sub-portfolios, left click on the "+" icon next to the sub-portfolio, and it will expand the contents of that sub-portfolio.

The right side of the Portfolio Editor is a "list view", and shows details on all of the contents of whatever item you have selected on the left.

You may find it beneficial to watch the tutorial on using the Portfolio Editor:
