General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Mark,

I use the notes field to enter comments about stocks from some of my news letters. When I click on the note icon the note box appears, but the date can default to who knows what date. If I change it to today and enter a note and then go to enter another note (Sometimes it takes two notes to put all the information in) it goes back to where it was before. Is there any way to make the note date default to today?

Hi 4Profits,

The date control in the Notes dialog should default to the most recently used date from any new transaction or price you enter. If you just start up the program, and don't enter any new transactions, it should default to the current date. This is the same behavior as used in any of the transaction dialogs, where the date defaults to the last one you used for entering some new price/transaction. Does yours work as described here, or would you like to see a different default?
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

That is not the way mine has ever behaved. My system almost never shuts down and every day I download the latest data. Today when I went to add a note It added it on July 27th

Also when I went to add a dividend I received from GE it entered that on July 27th.

I added a new note and selected today. I then went to add a new note again and it was back to July 27th

Hi Jim,

Can you try this experiment:

1) Record a new purchase for a unique date, like yesterday.

2) Bring up the dialog to add a new note. What day does it default to? It should default to yesterday (the day you just recorded the purchase for).
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry for the delay I was traveling.
Yesterday I booted my computer and notes defaulted to 11/11.
Today I entered two new investments for tracking (Zero shares) I went to add a note to both of them and the date defaulted to 11/11. I saved everything and closed Fund Manager and reloaded it now the notes default to 11/12

Hi Jim,

What date did you leave set in the New Investment dialog for opening date? I'm guessing 11/11, which set your last used date. FM remembers your last used date in transactions, and defaults future transactions (and notes) to that last used date.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

I see what you are saying now, I went and added a purchase on the 11/4 and the notes default to that.

If you are making a purchases every day this would be OK, but I use notes to log information and news daily in my investment file. It would be nice if this could be a preference to have Fund Manager default to the current date for everything or to the last transaction. More often than not when you enter a transaction it would be for the current day.

Mark,

This morning I downloaded my transactions and I had two stock purchases yesterday. The note field still defaults to 11/4 from my test yesterday. I would have thought that a transaction entry no matter how it is made would set the date

Hi Jim,

FM keeps track of the last "user-entered" date, and uses that as the default for the next time you need to enter a date. Retrieving transactions does not modify this last user-entered date.

It sounds like you did not exit FM since you did that test entry on 11/4? When you re-start FM that 'user-entered' date preferences resets to the current date.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

You are correct. I did not exit Fund Manager and I leave it running at all times.

I really feel that the any user input should default to the present date.
