FM directory

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

My mm4 file and dat files are all in one directory. I changed its name and (oops!) the mm4 file couldn't find any investments and I could not change the data location via the FILE menu.

So I went back and restored the directory name. But I'd still rather change it. What is the simplest way to change the name of the directory?

Hi JeanneMarie,

You could do it like this:

1) Open FM and after it opens your portfolio, use "File / Close Portfolio".
2) Go to the File Explorer and rename your folder.
3) Back in FM, use "File / Open Portfolio..." and browse to the new location.

Assuming all your data files are in that one folder it should open fine. Another option in case your data files aren't all in one location is:

1) Create the empty new directory name where you want your files using File Explorer.
2) Start FM, and use "File / File Operations / Set Data Location..." and pick this new folder.
3) You'll end up with 2 copies of your data files, one in the old, and one in the new folder. After you're sure everything is fine, you can delete the old folder.
Thanks,
Mark

They were all in one directory so procedure #1 went smoothly & quickly.

The name I changed was an umbrella folder for investment generally, so it had other FM sub-directories and unrelated sub-directories. So when I began to exit, I was alerted that FM couldn't find the auto-backup location. So I found that topic in the HELP file and fixed that quickly.

I think if I run into any more error messages, I'll manage on my own.

But thanks, Mark. That first step was crucial.
