Replacing dead laptop

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby crawfordn » Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:16 pm

Hi Mark,
My laptop died a horrible death and I have replaced it but must reinstall software. Do I have to repurchase the advisor version or is there a way to get a key for replacement?

Hi crawfordn,

No, you don't need to re-purchase. I've just now re-sent your license key to you via e-mail.
Thanks,
Mark

My next hurdle appears to be how to transfer the settings (reports, asset types, investment types, etc) from the office PC to the new laptop. I have transferred all of Fund Manager from the Documents folder, but that just transferred data and not other settings. Are they hiding somewhere?

Hi crawfordn,

If you follow these instructions:

https://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/newcomputer.html

that will help you move all your data and settings.
Thanks,
Mark

I have similar problem.
Had to do a complete reset of Windows 10 on my desktop.
Now when I start FM on either my old windows or in my last full backup of my computer before the reset, It opens with Portfolio Editor not my graphs.

Hi fitzmooney,

Did you transfer all your data/settings using the steps provided at this link:

https://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/newcomputer.html

? If so, that should transfer everything, including these preferences. If you prefer to just change it, set things up the way you want, and then use "File / Save Portfolio", as that will remember which windows you have open. So, open up the Portfolio Editor, and then save your portfolio, if you want it to open to your Portfolio Editor the next time.
Thanks,
Mark

Couldn't do anything as the data settings is greyed out.
Also I cant find any investments later than 2010.
They seem to have gone missing.
I am using FM 2018. Haven't needed to update.
Don't know whether that makes any difference.

Hi fitzmooney,

Are you trying to move your data to a new computer, or just find how to open your data on the same computer you've been using?

If the command "Set Data Location" is grayed out, this means you don't have any data open on that computer now. If you don't know where you're storing your data, you can search for *.mm4 and try to find the most recently modified portfolio file on your computer. Use "File / Open Portfolio..." to open it after you find it. You could also search for *.FMB and restore from the latest *.FMB file you find using "File / Restore...".
Thanks,
Mark

OK. I got it back. I have now to set the generic import to suit the ASX.
