Daniel,
You can store your investments wherever you like. There is nothing
special about the my_data folder, it is just a default for where you can
store your investments, but you can save them to whatever folder you want.

If you have your investments there now, and plan to move them, keep in
mind that the location of your portfolios with respect to your investments
needs to be kept the same. Portfolios store the relative path to their
investments. If you have all your portfolios and investments in the same
directory you can easily move that directory wherever you want, and the
portfolios will still open their associated investments.
