Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager
by aviator » Fri May 28, 2010 1:46 pm
Hi Mark,
Using Yahoo's historical prices, JPM is retrieved incorrectly, about half of its closing price.
I've checked Yahoo's financial website and it is correct there.
I've since switched to Bloomberg for current and historical prices and JPM is correct there.
Thought you'd like to know...
Thanks.

Hi aviator,
Thanks, but I couldn't reproduce this problem. I retrieved JPM for the month of May from Yahoo (Historical), and all the prices seemed correct in my manual review. Can you still reproduce this problem? Can you give me an example day/price that show up incorrect? Are you using quote module 419 (the latest)? Are you looking at the prices in the Data Register, or somewhere else?

Hi Mark,
I was able to reproduce the wrong prices again. I am using module 419. I used the following criteria today:
Default quote server: Yahoo
Default historical quote server: Yahoo (Historical)
Date range: 5/27/2010 to 5/31/2010
I then right click on the account, select Retrieve Selected Historical Prices, and change the default date range (of 5/30/2010 to 5/31/2010) to the new date range (of 5/27/2010 to 5/31/2010).
JPM is the only security returned with incorrect prices (5/27/2010 = $22.07 and 5/28/2010 = $22.18 ). According to Yahoo's website, the closing price on 5/28/2010 was $39.58.
I changed the quote servers to Bloomberg for both current and historical prices and, using the same criteria, retrieved prices. Bloomberg returned the correct prices.

Think I may have found the problem. When I look at Yahoo's historical prices, the ADJUSTED share price for JPM is exactly what's being returned when I retrieve quotes.
But on 5/28/2010, the closing price (according to Yahoo) was $39.58, but the adjusted share price was $22.18. When comparing FM to my broker, they (the broker) are using $39.58, as is Bloomberg when I retrieve prices using their service.
Is there a setting that turns off the adjusted share price?

Hi aviator,
Check to make sure you aren't overriding the default historical quote server for your JPM investment. Look under 'Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve". It sounds like you've overridden this to by "Yahoo (Adjusted Historical)" instead of "<Default Server>", which you have set to "Yahoo (Historical)". Note, FM supports retrieving either the actual close or the adjusted close, depending on which server you're using. There are 2 different ones for historical prices from Yahoo.

Hi Mark,
I checked the Investment Properties.../Internet Retrieve, and both are set to <Default Server>. I'm fairly sure I've never changed those settings for any of my securities (including JPM), but even if I had it doesn't explain why Bloomberg's quote is correct, but Yahoo's isn't.
I don't know if this makes a difference, but I have JPM in two accounts. I checked the Investment Properties.../Internet Retrieve settings for both accounts, and they're identical. I even compared JPM's settings to a security that I've never had a problem with (PG), and the settings for PG are the same as both JPMs.
This isn't a major issue for me because I've found a way to get corrected quotes, but there's something wrong. I'll continue using Bloomberg and if I discover why Yahoo isn't working for JPM I'll let you know.

Hi aviator,
I took a closer look, and see that Yahoo is indeed returning historical prices that appear incorrect. If you look up JPM on Yahoo and click on "Historical Prices" on the left side, you'll see their historical pricing on JPM. There is both a "Close" column and an "Adj Close*" column. When retrieving from "Yahoo (Historical)", the data from the "Close" column is retrieved. For May 28th, Yahoo is showing this as 22.18. The "Summary" page shows the last trade on May 28 at $39.58, so it looks like the Yahoo Historical data is just wrong. This is a Yahoo issue that will need to be corrected by Yahoo.
