Error Retrieving Prices

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Stefan » Tue Nov 29, 2011 1:05 pm

For the last 2 days, whenever I try to retrieve prices (with Yahoo as default) I get an error if I try to use the price retrieve button on the toolbar.

The system starts to retrieve, then slows down, and I see something like "Request 78 (123)" in the pop up window and the timer going. And then the action fails with the pop-up: "One or more servers were unable to retrieve any prices. Would you like to read the help file online ....".

However, if instead of clicking the price retrieve button I go to each subportfolio, right click and select "Retrieve selected prices", the operation completes instantly and successfully, for each one of them. If I try the Master Portfolio adn right click and select to retreive selected prices, the same thing happens as when I click the retrieve button.
Could you please help with this?

I think I found the solution to this problem:

What seems to have caused the problem was that I had a subportfolio called TEST and I created a new subportfolio under it and created few new investments in it. FM than created the investement .dat files in a folder called TEST , which I had directly under "c:\", instead of creating these in my FM TEST folder which lives under "c:\users\stefan\documents\Fund Manager\Test".
So, when now I closed the subportfolio under Test, it apparently stopped retrieveing data for the investemnet in my c:\TEST folder and all goes OK. This is what I did. Why it had those manifestations is an issue to be looked at, I suppose.

Thank you,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

The location of the investment file on your hard drive should not matter. It may be that these investments were assigned to a different quote server than you were expecting. You can override the quote server settings on a per-investment basis. If you open back up those problematic investments, take a look at their "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve" and see what server they are retrieving from. You can also create a Custom report with the field "Quote Server". Create the report at the top sub-portfolio and turn off sub-totals. You can then sort by this field from the "Sort" menu so you can quickly see where all your investments are retrieving from.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you! This clarified the issue.

I did open up these investments, and indeed they were trying to retrieve quotes from the wrong server. And this explains not being able to update prices, as you suggested:

More background:

I created these few investments manually instead of importing transactions. These are ETFs. I think that by default (which I didn't think to modify) they got Type: Bond and teh quote server assigned was indeed Finra - Bonds instead of Yahoo, which now explains everything.

Thank you!
Stefan
