Adding another category to an investment

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby michael » Tue Jun 21, 2011 11:47 am

Hi Mark,

I'm trying the message board for the first time.

We are using the investment goal and asset type categories and have chosen appropriate labels for every investment already.

But, I'd like to also categorize investments according to the way they are bundled/totaled on the monthly brokerage statements. Ideally I'd like to run a report sorted by "Brokerage stmt classification."

Is it possible to add a third category with user defined fields for each investment?

Do you have a solution/work around?

Thanks,

Michael and Paul from FL

Hi Michael,

Sorry, but no, there are only 2 sets of categories for general use. You can also sub-total reports by investment type, but those are not currently user-adjustable.

One possible work-around would be to create sub-portfolios for each of these, and put the appropriate investments into each sub-portfolio. You can the sub-total by sub-portfolio on your report. You can have as many sub-portfolios as you want, with any amount of hierarchy.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

How would this impact the transaction retrieve and reconcile features? Each sub portfolio would have the identical transaction retrieve settings linked to one brokerage account. Would it pull in duplicate information?

Or perhaps I could I just enter the transaction retrieve settings at the parent level?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Correct, you would just leave the transaction retrieve settings at the one parent level.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

When retrieving transaction history, would FM put new investments it creates into the parent portfolio?

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Yes, it would. If you wanted them put into one of the subs, you'd have to drag/drop them into the appropriate one.
Thanks,
Mark
