ROI BTW and 3m in report

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby csharin » Mon May 02, 2011 8:01 am

Hi Mark,

I run a portflio report for 3 month and btw roi.

Yields are not annualized for less than one year and boxes are not checked for yield interpolation range.

I ran 2 reports, 12/31/10 to 4/29/11 and 1/1/11 to 4/29/11. I have prices entered for 12/31/10 and 1/1/11 (they are of course the same as 1/1 is a Saturday). I also have price entered for 4/29/11

The 3m roi for 3 months are the same on both reports, but the 1/1/11 report has asteriks. Why?

The btw is different on the two reports and the 12/31 report has asterik, but the 1/1/11 report does not. Why different roi's and why one with asterik and one without?

Thanks//Cliff

Hi Cliff,

For the 3M figure, this is 3M back from the ending report date. The report's start date doesn't matter for this field. Since 4/29 is not the last day of the month, your 3M yield term will be from 1/30 - 4/29. For a yield term that starts on 1/30, you need a closing price on 1/29, or else it will need to interpolate. The close of 1/29 is used as the start of 1/30 point.

For the BTW yields, if your report start date is 12/31/10, you need a price recorded on 12/30/10, or else one will be interpolated. Yields are inclusive of the starting/ending dates. Similarly for a start date of 1/1/11, you need a price on 12/31/10.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Are you saying that with an end date of 4/30, I need a clsoing price on 1/31 to avoid interpolation? Because I am comparing two funds, both have data for 1/31 (and not 1/30 or 2/1). One has asteik and one does not.

Right now I record prices monthly only on the last business day of the month, e.g. 4/29, 1/31 ( and reinvested, purchases etc.) On what additioal dates do I need to record data to get a clean roi without interpolation for Feb/March/April?

Hi Cliff,

You need a closing price for the day before the yield term starting date.

I am confused on what yield term you are using where you get an asterisk. Please tell me the field you are using, and the report date settings where you are getting an asterisk.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Let me ask it in a different way:

I want a 3m roi without asterik for Feb/March/April 2011.

I have data for 11/30/10, 12/31/10 1/31/11, 2/28/11, 3/31/11 and 4/29/11 (last business day of the months) for all funds. Is there any end date that I can use to get 3m (feb/march/April 2011) roi without asterik or do I need additional data? If need more data what dates do I need and what should I use as the end date?

With 4/29 as end date all 3m roi have asteriks
With 4/30 as the end date some 3m have asteriks, some do not.

I think it has something to do with the number of days in a month and where weekends fall.

3m roi ending 3/31, 2/28 have no asterik.
3m roi ending 1/31 and 4/29 have atserik.

Thanks//Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Set your end date to 4/30/11 and make sure you have a price recorded on 1/31/11.

Explanation: With an end date of 4/30/11, a 3 month yield term will start on 2/1/11. Therefore, for a starting point on 2/1, you need a closing price on 1/31.
Thanks,
Mark
