Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

I have a problem affecting numerous reports . Problem is that while totals shown are correct ..one of the investments is missing from the report. Example:
Portfolio Value Report
Inv 2 $10
Inv 3 $20
Inv 4 $30
total $ 100
Total is correct for portfolio but Inv 1 @$40 is not shown. Occurs also in asset allocation report . Any idea where to look for issue? Will be glad to send pdf of report if it will help.

Hi fmtg01,
Maybe the investment is hidden? If you turn on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" does it show up?

I have actually the opposite problem of this. My reports list all my holdings but total them incorrectly. Here is one example:
investment a: $24,229
Investment b: 47,162
Investmebt c: 2,658
Total: 98,259.

Hi Mary Kennedy,
Did you try turning on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios"? This is usually the cause of problems like this. The total includes everything in the sub-portfolio, and if one or more of your investments are hidden, and have a non-zero value, the sub-portfolio total won't equal the sum of the displayed lines.

Nothing is hidden in any of my portfolios and each list of holdings matches exactly what shows in my Fidelity account, except that the totals in FM are all wrong.

Hi Mary Kennedy,
How are you confirming nothing is hidden? You must turn on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" to know for sure. If that doesn't resolve the problem, please email me a screen shot showing the problem. I will send you an email with instructions on making a screen shot.

I'm sorry, There were things hidden, though I'm not sure why. I read your menu guidance on hiding investments and had the impression that it was for things that had been sold, so I couldn't figure out why sold things would change the sum of the holdings. I since discovered that for some reason I had duplicates of some of my holdings and the duplicates had been hidden. I deleted them, but will that make them truly disappear or will they continue to be hidden? I don't know how they became duplicated in the first place, or how they became hidden in the first place.

Hi Mary Kennedy,
Glad you found the problem. If you "close" an investment that will remove it from your sub-portfolio. Save your portfolio file with "File / Save Portfolio" to memorize this change. If you select an investment in the Portfolio Editor window, and press the Delete key on your keyboard this is closing that investment.

Hi Mark,
Am using Fund Manager (Pro) a lot more and have really grown to like it.
However with the use ..I'm running into frequent problems with hidden investments. I can always track them down but I don't understand how investments get hidden. Does the switch get flipped once you sell an investment and even when you buy it back , it stays hidden? I can always unhide them but then the reports are cluttered with lots of unneeded lines and I'm spending a lot of time tracking down reports that are missing detail lines and in some cases asset class subtotals due to "hidden" investments. Can you give me any advice?
thanks

When looking through a report and at indidivdual investments, I have twice "closed" an investment inadvertently. Is there any way to "undo" a close ..or any way to figure out what investment it is so that I can reopen it (eg problem is that I closed what turned out to be "PTTDX13" -ie the 13th instance of the PIMCO fund. Fortunately I hadjust finished moving investments one by one from another file and I knew this particular investment/sub-portfolio was PTTDX13 but if I hadn't I'm not sure what I would have done.(I'd set up a new sub-portfolio and downloaded the transactions but the "save new investment" file location was set inadvertantly to an incorrect offline folder location)

Fund Manager never automatically turns on/off the hidden property of an investment. The only way the hidden property can be changed is either through the Investment Properties... dialog or by using "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments...".
For reports, investments can be not displayed either because of the hidden attribute, or a report option to not display investments with zero shares. Maybe this is part of the confusion? See "Options / Report Preferences... / General / Do Not Display Investments With Zero Share Balance".

In general there is no real easy way to know the filename you previously closed. Here are a couple of suggestions though:
1) In the Advisor version there is an Audit Trail log feature. This logs the path and filename of the investment when you close it. Since you're using the Pro version this isn't any help in your case...
2) If you haven't made other changes that you need to save you can exit without saving your portfolio. Turn off "Options / Save Portfolio On Exit", and exit FM without saving. For this case it is fine to save your investment data, you would just want to not save your portfolio file (*.mm4), as that remembers what investments are included in each sub-portfolio.

As usual, thanks for your help...the approach to closed investments of unchecking the "save portfolio on exit" option seems like it will work fine.
Hidden investments -- I've looked at what you're saying but I don't recall ever having set the "File Operations/Hide Sold Investments" switch -- but I have found a lot of hidden investments --I'll pay more close attention to it going forward. At present none of my investments is "hidden" so as long as I don't touch the File Operations/Hide Sold Investments switch , I should not see any more hidden investments. I've also set the report preferences to "Never"
