Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Firstly, I must congratulate you on a great product. I am trying it out and am on the verge of buying it - one very important factor in that decision has been the active nature of this support forum and the rate of fixes & updates being put out - I'm impressed!

I have one question. I live in India, and own a bunch of mutual funds. Unfortunately, current prices for these do not get reported through any of the standard exchanges, and thus through any standard stock symbol on Yahoo India. You have to retrieve the current pricelist (updated daily) from a specific website http://www.amfiindia.com/portal/upload/downloadnav.txt

I noticed that I can use the import feature to parse prices out of this and update my portfolio (the native format of this file is not quite supportable directly, but I can clearly write a script to munge this so that it can be ingested). That is great, but I have to do it manually - there is no way to have it automatically updated every day.

I would *really* like to have the prices in my portfolio updated daily automatically. Ideally it would be great if you added http://amfindia as a native source (I'm sure there are a lot of people who would benefit from this - mutual funds are extremely popular in India right now) - but failing that would it be possible to add a "file" as a source that gets parsed automatically on a set period (just like other sources can be)? I can then write an independent script to just update the text file daily on my machine on a timer and everything will work like a charm ...

Hi sharadm,

Thanks for the feedback. The ability to automatically read from a file isn't a feature today, but we can consider adding it. Thanks also for the quote server suggestion. That file looks rather easy for parsing. I assume the "Scheme Code" is the same as the "Symbol"?
Thanks,
Mark

Yes - "Scheme code" is the equivalent of Symbol. It would be great if you can add this directly as a source. Independent of that, IMHO it's a good idea to allow a File (with parsing template) as a direct scheduled source in addition to a manual import - it adds to the flexibility without any real new work required on your part :-)

In the meantime I'm going to go ahead & buy this - you might see more questions from me as I move all my portfolio's over ...

Thanks!

Hi sharadm,

Thanks for your order. I do agree it would be a nice addition to be able to automatically read in from a local file. It should be fairly easy to extend the current command line interface for retrieving to support this.
Thanks,
Mark
