Truncated Parent Account.

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby aviator » Mon Apr 21, 2014 10:51 am

Hi Mark,

I've created a custom report, with the Parent Account field in the right-most column. For some reason the data in that field is being shrunk to the point of being unusable.

In the sample below, this particular fund is in three portfolios. However, the report displays one account number (which I've redacted for privacy), but the other two don't display at all.

I've tried moving this column toward the middle of the report and expanding the width, but I get the same results.

I'm using FM Professional version 2014.13.1

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi aviator,

Yes, unfortunately this field is currently limited to displaying only 49 characters. If an investment belongs in multiple sub-portfolios, it will try to display all of them, up to the point that they fit within this 49 character limit.

You may also want to utilize the display in the status bar. If you put your mouse over a particular investment, it will display in the status bar all the sub-portfolios that it is located in.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately that doesn't help because this particular report gets printed for my wife in a pdf format.

It also appears that the data in the Portfolio Parent is right-justified. Seems there would be a benefit to having it left-justified to make it more readable?

Let's try to skin this cat a different way: Is there a field that shows the lowest sub-portfolio an investment is in? This is really what I'm looking for. In other words, if my portfolio consists of A (the parent), and B, C, and D (with D being the great-grandchild sub-portfolio), I want use the field that displays the name of sub-portfolio D.

I've looked in the Custom Report Settings, Misc/Other Fields but couldn't find anything. (Might I suggest a search function as a future enhancement for all available fields... given how many fields are available it would be very helpful.)

Hi aviator,

Check out: "Portfolio parent". This field displays the name of the immediate sub-portfolio containing an investment.

Yes, a search might be useful in that dialog, there are many fields to look through. That is the idea of the "Available Fields" drop-down, so you can at least filter the list by area.
Thanks,
Mark

Check out: "Portfolio parent". This field displays the name of the immediate sub-portfolio containing an investment.

Unfortunately, Portfolio Parent is also displaying the "3 Portfolios:" on the left side of the field, which is cutting off the information I really need.

I have several securities that are in multiple portfolios. My custom report shows asset allocation by Investment Goal, an option that's not available through the standard Asset Allocation report. I believe having a security in more than one portfolio causes FM to display "3 Portfolios:... (and all the portfolios are listed) " even though each security is listed separately in its own row.

All I need to see is the parent portfolio of the security *in that row*. I don't need to know how many portfolios it's in, nor do I need to know what *other* portfolios it's in. I just need to know the name of the portfolio for the line (row) that's being displayed. Is this possible?

Hi aviator,

That field should be showing only information about that particular investment. Are you listing by investment in your report? If so, how many sub-portfolios is that investment located directly in?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes, I'm listing by Investment (and sub-totaling by Investment Goal).

This particular security is in two other portfolios, for a total of three. I'm running this report on the level below the master portfolio. So I think FM is counting the master portfolio as one of the portfolios.

Sorting the report in different ways has no affect.

Don't know if this makes a difference, but I'm using a custom date (in this case 4/21/14 to 4/21/14).

Hi aviator,

It should only be displaying sub-portfolios where that investment is directly located. For example:

Code: Select all
- Master Portfolio
  - My Accounts
    - Acct 1
      o Investment 1

If you report and see "Investment1" in a report, it should only report "Acct 1" for the Parent portfolio, and not "My Accounts", or "Master Portfolio". If you're seeing this, you might go double check that this investment isn't accidentally in there directly.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

The investment is indeed in more than one account. However, the report lists by Investment so the duplicate investments each have a row of their own. What I want to see is the portfolio each investment is in, regardless of how many other sub-portfolios it's in.

Here's an example of how my portfolio looks:
(Edit: Ugh, not sure why my spacing on the account hierarchy below didn't work, but assume that Schwabb is a child of Master, and that all accounts and investments are children of Schwabb.)

- Master
- Schwabb
- Acct 1
- Investment 1
- Acct 2
- Investment 1
- Acct 3
- Investment 1
The report is run over the Schwabb sub-portfolio, not the Master. Investment1 exists in 3 accounts and therefore appears three times in the report, each in its own row. But the Portfolio Parent for each row on Investment1 displays "3 Portfolios: Acct 1, Acct 2...". While this information tells me that Investment1 is in 3 portfolios (which is true), it doesn't tell me *which* portfolio this investment is in.

What I want the Portfolio Parent to display is "Acct 1" for the appropriate sub-portfolio of Investment1, "Acct 2" for the appropriate sub-portfolio of Investment1, etc.

Hi aviator,

I see... As you can tell, it doesn't work this way. These 2 fields always reports all accounts that it is directly located in, no matter how the report is sub-totaled. We can see about adding a new field that works as you're describing.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks, Mark. It would be very helpful to have a field that displays only the account that the investment is in.
