Custom reports disappeared from menu on reinstall

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby iwik » Thu Sep 26, 2013 3:14 am

I've had to reinstall FM as part of a full rebuild of a computer. The portfolio and investment files were all recovered successfully from backups.

When Fund Manager was opened, it also successfully reopened a custom report that was obviously open the last time FM was used prior to the backup. No problems here. However, even though the report is open on the screen, it is not present on the reports menu (none of the custom reports are there).

How do I reinstate the custom reports back on the menu? I assume they have been saved as part of the backup as one is currently being displayed!

Thanks and regards

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Your memorized reports are stored as part of your preferences in the registry. Portfolio files (*.mm4) also memorize the settings for all your currently opened reports, so that is why you're seeing the correct settings for that report that was saved as part of your portfolio.

If you do a restore using "File / Restore..." you can restore your preferences, which are your registry settings. That will restore your memorized reports, as well as all your other preferences not memorized as part of the portfolio file.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark, that did the trick.

I'd never really had a look at the FMB files before, but these were all captured as part of the backups so easy to retrieve. The last of these was written back in May - are these only updated when some configuration change is made?

Is the any particular way FM should be backed up. My backup simply snapshots a copy of the whole data directory (all the portfolio and investment files, plus the backups subdirectory).

Hi Andrew,

It is fine to backup by copying the data folder, but if you backup using Fund Manager it makes certain you are backing up all your open files, plus registry preferences. These are stored as *.FMB files when you backup using Fund Manager. There is also an automatic backup feature in Fund Manager. See "Options / General Preferences... / Data". You can control how often automatic backups happen, and where they are stored. The automatic backup happens when you exit Fund Manager. You can manually create a backup from within the program anytime you want by using "File / Backup...".
Thanks,
Mark
