Adding Investments with different currencies

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Glenn2 » Sat Jan 30, 2010 4:58 pm

I am trying to get a total value figure across 3 sub-portfolios each with a different currency ie USD, CAD and AUD. I have set-up the currency translation table. When I look at the parent portfolio of these 3 sub-portfolios I want to see the results in one currency ie AUD.

I have also tried putting the stocks of different currencies into one sub-portfolio and then from the parent portfolio looked at the total value. The value shown just adds up the individual stock values irrespective of currency.

How do I get a value of my various currency investments represented in one currency?

Hi Glenn2,

Make sure your settings are correct under "Options / Currency Settings..." and that you have AUD assigned as your default currency. Then, turn on "View / Exchange Rate Adjusted", and everything will be displayed in AUD, using the exchange rate settings you've specified. For more on this, check out our multiple currency tutorial:

Thanks for the reply. It was the "View Exchange Rate Adjusted" flag I had missed. After changing this flag, the figures now changes everything into my default currency and adds correctly. Though I can see why this feature might be of use to someone who just wants to deal in a single currency and it does give me the total I want, I think what I have raised is in fact a bug. FM should know that it cannot add different currecies together as if they were the same. I would like to be able to work with a foreign stock in the foreigh stock's currency and then know if I am looking at a total across currencies that it adds them correctly. Can you raise this with the developers to see what can be done.

Hi Glenn2,

You have a good point. When this option is off FM will go ahead and display total values of portfolios with investments being displayed in different currencies. I agree this is not strictly correct. In some cases we try to make this clear by labeling the total with "(na)" for the currency symbol, like in the Portfolio Value report, but we don't always display this everywhere. We will look into making this an option. Some people may still want to see these totals. The default for this option will probably be set so that you do not get totals of mixed-currency investments.
Thanks,
Mark

I just discovered that if I show "Currency" in the legend text in the graphs then if all of the investments are not of the same currency then it displays "na", though the graph does still add up the amounts in different currencies. This at least is an indicator I will use to alert me to the fact that the total is not correct and to remind me to select the currency translate facility.
