Recently unable to download fund quotes from Yahoo Germany

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Kodiak73 » Tue Dec 15, 2009 11:49 am

Hi,

I am using a 10.2 version and had successfully setup Fund Manager to download price quotes for several of my European mutual funds. And then recently (around Dec 8th) it has stopped working. I had upgraded from 9.x version, but I don't think that matters because it was working for several days after upgrading.

One mutual fund example is: Templeton Global Bond Fund A. I use LU0152981543EUR as the symbol and LU0152981543 for the CUISP/ISIN. However, it is unable to update prices on this investment now.

Has anybody seen issues with Yahoo Germany? Or is there a new configuration I need?

Hi Kodiak73,

This symbol doesn't seem to be available on Yahoo - Germany. Prices are looked up by symbol, so the CUSIP you record in Fund Manager does not matter. If you visit Yahoo with your web browser, you can try to look up the symbol they are using. If you can find it with your web browser, then record the same symbol in Fund Manager. For links to all the quote servers, go here:

Ok, I delved into this a little bit more. Something has changed on the Yahoo Germany site side I think. So a few things I've learned.

1. When you enter the symbol, it says don't know that symbol. and gives you to this page: http://de.finsearch.yahoo.com/de/index. ... 3&tp=S&r=*
2. If you then change the Gattung (investment type) to Fonds and resubmit, it comes back with the fond and details but in a table. (http://de.finsearch.yahoo.com/de/index. ... sub=Suchen).
3. The &tp field in the URL is the key, when this is F, then it the fund is found directly. Is it possible to parse the table from here?

If not, I have another brokerage that allows has quotes more easily available:
http://www.fondsdepotbank.de/fundsearch ... 0152981543 as an example. But I think this requires some kind of XML/HTML parsing too.

Hi Kodiak73,

Interesting... When you're looking at the table at:

http://de.finsearch.yahoo.com/de/index. ... sub=Suchen

I see it does show the price in that table, and there is a link to what should show the individual quote. It links to:

http://de.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=LU0152981543EUR

but that link does not work. This seems like a problem with Yahoo - Germany's site.

Fund Manager currently does not parse from that table. It gets the data from the "Data Download" link on the main quote page, like from here:

http://de.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=^GDAXI

The "Data Download" link goes here:

http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quo ... hgv&e=.csv

Hopefully Yahoo will fix this issue, and start providing that quote again. If not, maybe it is available on some other quote server. I took a quick look on Bloomberg, and they do seem to have this fund. Please visit them at:

http://www.bloomberg.com/

and click on "Symbol Search". If you search for "Templeton Global Bond Fund A", you'll get a long list of choices, and the appropriate symbols for each. I wasn't sure exactly which one you're using, but hopefully you can tell. Once you figure out the symbol, change the symbol in FM, and edit your quote server to Bloomberg, either globally under "Options / Internet Settings...", or on a per-investment basis under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve".
Thanks,
Mark

BTW, I did switch over to using bloomberg. It works great and I get historical data too.

For any others having European mutual funds across multiple different exchanges I can recommend using bloomberg. I generally used Google with the ISIN or WKN and keyword bloomberg and with a little bit of search I was able to find the right bloomberg code.
