Dividends for Canadian stocks paid in USD

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby ThomasK » Thu Aug 28, 2014 12:48 pm

Hi Mark,

Most of my dividends are from Canadian stocks. Some of these pay dividends in USD.

The conversion from USD to CAD thus has a different tally in FM and on my statement.

Is there a fix?

Thanks,
ThomasK

Hi ThomasK,

I would record everything exactly as it happens. I'm guessing that these Canadian stocks actually pay in CAD, but that gets converted to USD at some point. If you have a Canadian stock that trades/prices in CAD, then you should record all transactions/prices in CAD. If it pays out a dividend, receive it in CAD, but then transfer it to USD if that is what happens. You can sell CAD, and buy USD. You would have 2 cash investments, one in CAD and one in USD.
Thanks,
Mark
