Trying to Import .CSV file of buys & sells

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby gph65 » Sat Nov 23, 2013 10:42 am

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out the format string for importing .csv of buys and sells. The import isn't working. I've looked at the help file on importing Generic and am still clueless. Any help appreciated in ordering the format string. Also, do I need to include the totals? (shares x price = x?). Also, fee is 1% of total portfolio, not per transaction. Thanks for any help with this.

Here's the Notepad file of the .csv transactions.

Hi gph65,

No, you don't need the transaction total. You do need the commission fee though. You must have the value of the commission fee, you can't tell it "1% of the total". Or, you can just set the fee on a per-transaction basis to $0, and record an account fee for the total you were charged. You would put that in whatever investment it was taken out of, like cash. So, change your importing file to look like this:

Date,Symbol,Type,Price,Shares,Fee
12/14/12,WDC,BUY,37.82,46,0

and then when you import, you would use a format string of:

MM/DD/YY,SYMB,TRAN,ANUM,BNUM,CNUM

Note, even if the fee is $0, you still must have a 0 in the file, it can't be blank.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your response above. In the general transaction import screen, I keep getting a message “Could not find all specified fields in the importing file.” It looks like I have all the specified fields: UD,SYMB,TRAN,ANUM,BNUM,CNUM so I cant figure out why I keep getting this message. I’ve also tried MM/DD/YY,SYMB,TRAN,ANUM,BNUM,CNUM.

A line in the .csv file looks like this: 12/14/12,WDC,BUY,37.82,46,0

Hi gph65,

For a line like:

12/14/12,WDC,BUY,37.82,46,0

That will import with the format string of:

MM/DD/YY,SYMB,TRAN,ANUM,BNUM,CNUM

I just tested this here to make sure, and it did import okay. If you're still having troubles, please try copying/pasting the format string from above. If that doesn't help, try attaching a small sample CSV file back to a post here, and let me know the exact format string you're using.
Thanks,
Mark
