Recommended Way To Merge Portfolios

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby LewE » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:49 am

I use Fund Manager 8.10 and have two different IRA accounts held at one broker (Scottrade). AT the broker I combined the two accounts so that one is no longer active and the other has the mutual funds for both accounts. Both accounts had the same mutual funds in them before the merge.

What is the rcommended way to handle this merge in Fund Manager so that it only looks at the one portfolio and sees all the mutual funds?

Hi LewE,

In version 9.0 we added new "Transfer" transactions. These are the preferred method to merge 2 accounts like you've described. When you use a "Transfer Out" from your old account, this does not generate a capital gain event, as it would if you recorded this as a sell. Also, the "Transfer In" allows you to specify a different cost basis/date from the transfer value/date. There is also a "Transfer Between" wizard that will generate one transfer out, and as many transfer in transactions as necessary to preserve all your cost basis dates/values. So, I would suggest upgrading to 10.x, and using the Transfer Between dialog...
Thanks,
Mark
