Creating Sub-Portfolios without Screwing Up Client Reports

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby astraseske » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:07 pm

Hi Mark,

I'm trying to figure out how to 'Group' all the client's accounts together that are modeled after a 'growth portfolio' in order to run internal reports while still being able to print a batch report for all clients. For example, in only the accounts in the growth portfolio, there are these holdings, this much cash, etc. But, I still want to be able to batch print/email all of the accounts.

So, I created these sub-portfolios and started adding the appropriate accounts to the sub-portfolio, but quickly realized that when printing performance reports that the accounts were no longer linked to the client's sub-portfolio. The way I understand it, is that I could not have a client with 2 accounts, one in a growth sub-portfolio folder, one in the income sub-portfolio folder, and have the two accounts linked to one executive summary report for the client because each of those accounts are under a separate sub-portfolios. Am I right?

If so, can you give me some guidance on how I could achieve the objective of being able to view only the growth portfolio accounts while not sacrificing the batch print/email function?

Thanks, Mark. Hope you are well.

Warm regards,

Adam

Hi Adam,

I would suggest a sub-portfolio hierarchy like this:

Code: Select all
- Master Portfolio
  - Clients
    - John Doe
      - JD Acct 1
      - JD Acct 2
    - Mary Smith
      - MS Acct 1
      - MS Acct 2
  - Strategies
    - Growth
      - JD Acct 1 (link)
      - MS Acct 1 (link)
    - Value
      - JD Acct 2 (link)
      - MS Acct 2 (link)

All the (link) sub-portfolios are linked to their location under the client's name. This way, any changes you make in the original location are mirrored under your "Strategies" hierarchy.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

OK, thought I could find a 'link' button in one of the menus, but have searched for a half hour and give up. Can you please tell me how to 'copy and link' the clients accounts to another sub-portfolio?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

You create a new sub-portfolio where you want the link sub-portfolio, and choose the "Link To..." button in the Portfolio Properties dialog, and select what you want this new sub-portfolio to be linked to.

For example, to create the "JD Acct 1 (link)" sub-portfolio in the example below, right mouse click on "Growth" and choose "New Sub-Portfolio..." from the popup menu. Press "Link To..." and choose "JD Acct 1".
Thanks,
Mark
