Cash Book Value does not reflect Shares held at $1/share

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Hi Mark,

I created a User Defined Custom Report Field for Book Value. I think I did this specifically just to have a better title in the column heading vs the one FM has built in.

The equation is "OOPinvested_btw"

My CAD Cash and USD Cash account in one Sub-Portfolio is now out of whack. Using the $1/share standard their Shares Held is not the same as Book Value after a bunch of purchases, so that Shares Held are fine but the Book Value according to the equation is now severely negative.

I think the issue might be how i set the portfolios up...I did a fudge of simply posting my current holdings (New Investment) and their average costs and a cash total to make FM show what my broker statements were. This is where I might have gone off the path?!?

Where or what should I be looking for to get these two cash accounts back in line...past entries seemed fine up until just recently. My recent purchases were done as New Investments and some were done via the Data Register as New >> Buy/Sells .

Thanks,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

You might want to add the built-in field you're trying to re-define, just so you can make sure the user-defined field is calculating as expected.

The OOP Invested (between) field is the net "change" in Out Of Pocket money during the report date range. It is not the total OOP basis as of the ending report date, like I think you may be expecting. It is the contributions - withdrawals - distributed distributions. This does not equate to the value held. For example, it doesn't include the beginning value. If you want to know the OOP cost basis for the currently held shares, use either:

Out of pocket basis (current)
or
Out of pocket basis (inception)

See the online help for the Custom report for a discussion of the difference between these fields.
Thanks,
Mark
