Sorting by Category Definition

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby Ivan » Thu Dec 09, 2010 3:03 pm

On the Asset Allocation Report, the default sort is by "Category Definition". Is there a way to set that characteristic for User Defined Asset Type Labels? For instance, if I create a Mid Cap Stock label, can I set its category so it sorts with the other stocks?

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

I'm not sure I understood your question. You can set the category labels under "Options / Category Labels...", so use that dialog to change "User Defined 1" or whatever you want to "Mid Cap Stock". The default sort order of "Category Definition" is the order which you've defined the categories in that dialog.

Did this answer your question?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes. It didn't occur to me that I could change the predefined categories as well as the custom categories. Can I assume that there is nothing special about the predefined categories and that I can change them without losing any functionality?

Hi Ivan,

There is nothing special about the default category names. You can change any of them to anything you want. Please note though, if you have already assigned your investments to some categories, those assignments are done by category position. So, if you assigned an investment to the 3rd category named "ABC", and then you rename the 3rd category to "XYZ", that investment still belongs in the "XYZ" category. If you moved "ABC" from the 3rd to 4th position, the investment stays assigned to the 3rd position, unless you change it in the properties of the investment. Basically, the assignment is done by category position, and not name.
Thanks,
Mark
