401k transactions and performance report

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby DHSmith » Wed Nov 10, 2010 7:16 pm

I am getting a gain percentage and a portfolio performance for the YTD that are both negative. It is wrong, but I'm not sure what i have done incorrectly in entering data. I began the year with an investment with a value of ,say 800, and a cost of 500. I then changed investments, completely transferring the original investment to several others. And then I transferred those investments to another single investment. ( So every transaction completely zero balanced the prior investment.) I get the correct numbers for portfolio value, but not the return dollars or percent. Seems the OOP on the original investment is being transferred out when I transferred the investment, and the difference between the OPP and market value is being shown as a loss.

I'm at a loss on how to correct this. It's a 401k, so I do not want transactions to show in the cap gains report. which brings up a second question: is there a way to set the default for a 401k so that the whole sub portfolio transactions will be recorded as tax free?

Thanks

Hi David,

Where are you viewing this gain percentage and portfolio performance? Is this in the "Portfolio Performance" report? Which exact fields are you looking at? There are different types of gain percentage fields available. Are the other fields in the report correct, like the Beg Value, Invested, Distrib, and End Value fields?

You can only mark individual investments as tax-free. There is not an option to mark a whole sub-portfolio as tax-free. This is something we are hoping to add in the future.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark, thanks for the quick reply. I am looking at the YTD Portfolio performance report. The beginning value is the correct market value. All of the withdrawals , ie for each transaction (done as transfers) show the OOP, not the market value. The with-distributions column is blank, probably correct as all were reinvested. The ending value is correct (zero in all cases except for the one open investment). The total gain dollars column is always the difference between the contributions and the OOP withdrawals cost (in others words incorrect and in fact negative), except for the one open investment which does show the gain as the market price less cost. And the %gain is wrong, also showing negative on the original starting investment.

Hi David,

The %Gain field is based off OOP values. A Transfer Out has an OOP equal to the OOP cost of the transferred out shares. For a Transfer In, you specify the OOP cost. If you don't want to use the OOP cost from the transferred shares, but instead the market value, you may consider using buy/sell instead of transfers. If you mark these investments as tax-free, they will not show up on your capital gains report.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks!!!

If I mark an investment tax free for this sub-portfolio, will it only apply for the sub-portfolio? (I have some of the same investments in the taxable portfolio.)

Hi David,

Yes. Each investment has its own properties. You should have separate investment files for each account holding the same security. This way, you can track the transactions separately, and they can also have separate properties, like their tax-free status.

If you'd like to double check that your investment files are different, turn on "Location" and "Filename" in the Portfolio Editor, using "View / List Columns...". Then, you can see the location and filename of each investment in each account. They should be different, for each investment. For example, if you own IBM in multiple accounts, one account may be saving it as IBM1.dat, while the other could be IBM2.dat.
Thanks,
Mark
