Historical prices - updating difficulty

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby mike000111 » Wed Jul 20, 2011 8:01 pm

I am a new user of FM. I am trying to do a portfolio performance report but despite doing downloading the historical values, the reports all show the share price at the nominated starting date of the report as the value of initial purchase rather than updated value for the date requested. Other reports are the same in thet the historical share prices are taken as the price initially paid rather than the price on the nominated date of the report.

Can anyone advise on how to fix this. Incidentally I am in Sydney. I have tried historical downloading from asx, yahoo aus and even google. Same problem

Hi mike000111,

On the Portfolio Performance report, the "Beginning Value" column is the number of shares you owned on the beginning report date times the closing price. For example, if you have a report starting 1/1/2011, the number of shares owned on the morning of 1/1/2011 and the price on the morning of 1/1/2011 are determined from the close of 12/31/2010. If your beginning value is not as you expect, check the number of shares owned, and the closing price. You can do this in the Data Register window. To open the Data Register, select "Edit / All Data...". In the upper/right section of this window, change the "Data Type" to "Prices". This will show you your recorded closing prices. Maybe you haven't actually successfully updated your closing prices? If you have updated prices, you will see them all here. If you haven't updated historical prices, make sure the symbol you're using in your investments is available on the quote server you're using. For more tips on updating pricing, please see:

Thanks Mark. You are correct in that I notice the historical prices have not been uploaded. I note also that the historical update button on the toolbar is showing as a ghost button whilst the update and other buttons are normal. I have tried historical update from asx, yahoo , google and others and to date no success. Can you suggest a fix.
Thanks heaps

Mike

Hi Mike,

Not all servers have historical prices, you must select a historical server. Go into "Options / Internet Settings..." and make sure you have some server with "Historical" in its name selected for your historical server.

Also, make sure that the symbols you have recorded for your investments are available on the quote server you're using. You can check by using your web browser, and going to the quote server's website. For links to all the quote servers, see:

If you're still not able to get historical prices, please let me know a sample ticker symbol you're trying to retrieve.
Thanks,
Mark
