Distribution Yield

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby Ivan » Wed Jul 06, 2011 4:12 pm

I back enter prices and distributions into FM to look at possible stocks and funds and would like to have FM calculate distribution yield. The Distribution Summary Report appears only to show data for distributions that have been reinvested. Is it possible to get distribution yield for back entered data where I do not own any shares?

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Yes, but when you enter the distribution you should be prompted for a "Distribution Per Share" amount, since you don't own any shares. This distribution per share amount will be used in the Dividend Yield calculation. If you press the "Help / Help on Report..." command while viewing the Distribution Summary report you can see the equation used for this field.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I must be doing something wrong or misunderstanding. The report works for me for the funds I own, but on the ones where I have back entered data it comes up empty. I have Prices and Distributions/Share entered for the period covered by the report for the back entered funds.

Hi Ivan,

If you look at the distributions in the Data Register under the "Distributions (all)" data type, are they categorized as "Dividends", and do they have a value for "Dist/Shr"?

If this doesn't help, maybe you can email me the investment file, and a date range of the report.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi again Mark,

Yes, they are listed as "Dividends" and have a value for "Dist/Shr". How do I email you the investment file?

You can find the filename under "Investment Properties... / Statistics".

Hi Mark,

I know how to find the file. What email address do I send it to?

Hi Ivan,

Is the problem that you aren't seeing the line item? I misunderstood the problem. I thought you were seeing it, but it was reporting as 0. Try turning off the option "Options / Report Preferences... / Distribution Summary / Do Not Display Line Items With No Distributions". It is being automatically hidden since you have 0 received distributions, since you own 0 shares.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Yes, the problem is that I am not seeing any line item. But I turned off the "Do Not Display Line Items With No Distributions" option as you suggest (it was on) and it didn't help. I still have no line showing.

Hi Ivan,

Since you don't own any shares, you would either need to turn on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios", or set the option under "Options / Report Preferences... / General / Do Not Display Investments With Zero Share Balance" to "Never".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

One more question on the Distribution Summary Report. I notice that the "Div Yield" gives the yield only for dividends, not Capital Gains, Interest Income, etc. Is there a way to get a "Distribution Yield" that includes all distributions?

Hi Ivan,

There isn't any such field as "Distribution Yield". You can get a TWR yield, which includes all distributions, but it also includes pricing changes.
Thanks,
Mark
