Capital Gains Report Content Missing

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby monotonicus » Sat Jan 15, 2011 2:09 pm

I just loaded in 2010 investment transactions. Most reports look reasonable, although I haven't scrutinized them. The one I am most interested in at the moment is Capital Gains, but it does not seem to be working well. Default settings produced an empty report. Capital Gains Report Preferences tab has three "Exclude Investments" checkboxes that don't solve the problem, but they have odd behavior that might be a clue.

The only two combinations of checks that produce any content are: 1) all unchecked and 2) Tax Free checked and the other two unchecked. All the other 6 combinations do not produce any output. This is not logical. The content that is produced is the same for both cases: cash account transactions only (Dividends). None of the stocks and ETFs are included.

I think all investments are unchecked in Hidden, Tax Free and Ignore when Reconciling. All are FIFO.

Can you help please?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

Do you have some redemptions recorded in the sub-portfolio you are reporting on, and within the date range of the report? If you turn off those options to exclude certain investments then any redemption in the sub-portfolio being reported on, and within the date range of the report will be listed. Take a look at your recorded transactions. You can either use the Data Register or an Investment Transaction report.
Thanks,
Mark

Yes, I had short term trades on 11 issues in 2010 and the report is for "Last Year". It is picking up dividends...but the "Exclude" check boxes are not working correctly, as I described...that may or may not be relevant.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

If you'd like to email me one investment file that has some redemptions that aren't showing up, I can take a look. I'll send you an email, so you can reply to that with an attached investment file.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mike,

Thanks for sending the sample investment file. The problem is your redemptions are recorded with negative shares, so they are essentially purchases. If you sell 100 shares, you want to record a sell of 100 shares, not a sell of -100 shares. Assuming you have a long position to start with, a sell of -100 shares increases your long position, instead of closing it. This is why there are no entries in the Capital Gains reports, because you have no closing transactions. Change the sells to be positive on the shares, and that will fix the issue.
Thanks,
Mark
