Custom Performance Report Fields

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby Ivan » Sun Dec 05, 2010 5:19 pm

I am putting together a Custom Performance Report which will be used with a date range of year or less and am a bit overwhelmed by the list of available fields. Can you make some suggestions? I am looking for the following columns:

- Beginning and ending market value
- Unrealized gain or loss
- Realized gain or loss
- Any income including interest/dividends, etc., whether reinvested or not
- ROI (IRR)
- Annualized ROI (IRR)

All columns are to be for the date range of the report.

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Look at these fields:

Value (beginning)
Value (ending)
Tax basis unrealized gain
Gain (between) or Gain (current)
Total Distributions (between)
ROI yield (between)

(ROI yields are annualized by default if longer than 1 year, and not if shorter than 1 year. You can change this behavior under "Options / General Preferences... / Yields".)

To find your total realized gains/losses, see the Capital Gains report.

Also, from within this report, select "Help / Help on Report..." and you can read about all the available fields.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark,

Two more questions:

1 - Does the fact that ROI's behavior is set outside the report mean that I can't have annualized and non-annualized ROI columns in the same report?

2 - I want to save the report without date ranges so that I can enter them when I select it, but if I memorize it, it saves it with the old ranges. How do I save just the columns so I can enter the date range as with any non-custom report?

Thanks again for your helpful and timely responses,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

1) Yes, that is correct. For yields with the same date range you cannot have an annualized an non-annualized number in the same report.

2) You can't memorize without dates. You can control whether the starting/end dates float, but they have to be part of the memorization. You can of course change it after recalling the memorized report. Just choose "Edit / Report Settings...".

Mark

Mark,

Several comments:

In regard to the inability to have ROI and annualized ROI in the same report, it's certainly not a show stopper, but it seems like a natural request and I'd be surprised if others don't want it. Your might consider it for future releases.

Regarding the date ranges on customized reports, I wasn't aware of the Edit/Report Setting option. Completely answers my needs.

I am still having some issues with a couple of the columns:

The Tax basis unrealized gain column appears to calculate from the purchase date, not from the start date of the report. I am looking to isolate the unrealized gain/loss due to change in NAV over the date range of the report.

You suggested that for the Realized Gain/loss I should reference the Capital Gains Report, but those fields do not appear to be available for custom reports. Can I get this as part of a custom report?

Both these columns (unrealized and realized gain) seem to be naturals for a performance report and, in fact I have taken them from the standard performance report of another portfolio management program which I am thinking of switching from to Fund Manager. I'd be a little surprised if they weren't available here. If you'd like I can send you a copy of the report I am trying to duplicate and maybe you can make suggestions.

Thanks
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for the feedback.

Only realized gains/losses is not available in a Custom report. You can get total (realized + unrealized), or unrealized only, but not "only realized". For that, you must use a Capital Gains report.

The tax basis unrealized gain is as of the ending date, and uses whatever accounting method you select. Maybe you would rather use the "Gain (between)" field? This will show you realized and unrealized over the time period of the report. If you only want unrealized, you can use "Gain (current)", which shows gain on only the shares still owned on the ending report date.
Thanks,
Mark
