Portfolio Performance report

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

In the Advisor version

I am having trouble coming up with how the software gets the beginning value colunm.

For example: I sold a bond fund prior to converting datato FM. The cost basis was $80537.22 yet the begining value shows $84397.97.

Where does that value come from?

Hi gcm223,

The "Beginning Value" in the Portfolio Performance report is the market value at the beginning of the report period. This means that it is the closing market value on the day before the report's start date. For example, if you run a Portfolio Performance report from 1/1/13 to today, the Beginning Value is the market value on the close of 12/31/12. You can think of it as the value on the start of 1/1/13.

Market value is determined by the number of shares owned times the market price. The number of shares you own on any given date is the sum of all transactions in that investment up through that date. You can view your transactions in the Data Register under the "Data Type" of "All Transactions". You can view your recorded market prices also in the Data Register, but under the "Data Type" of "Prices".

You could also create a Portfolio Value report for the date before your Portfolio Performance start date, and see how it is calculating the market value for that date. This report will show you the market price and the shares owned on any given date. In the example above, you would create this Portfolio Value report for 12/31/12.
Thanks,
Mark
