Hi Chandeleur,

If you want to copy investments and/or sub-portfolios, use the "Portfolio Editor", and copy/paste. See this tutorial:

http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/tutor_ports.html

If you want to copy transactions, use the "Data Register", and copy/paste. See this topic in the documentation:

http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/help ... paste.html
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

From the .../tutor_ports.html link below I have a question from one of the paragraphs:

(On a related note, if you hold down the Ctrl key while dragging the investments you will "copy" the investments instead of moving them. In this case you will see a little plus sign next to the cursor as you perform the drag. This "copy" is just another instance of the same investment file. It does not create a copy of the investment file(s) (*.dat) on your hard drive.)

Can you explain more fully what is the difference between "another instance of the same investment file" and "a copy of the investment file on your hard drive".

Thanks,
TK

Hi TK,

When you have multiple instances of the same investment file, any change you make to one, shows up everywhere you're using an instance of that investment. They are not independent. For example, if you have IBM.dat instantiated multiple times, everywhere you have an instance it will show the same data. Any changes you make are to that IBM.dat file, and all instances will see the same data. However, if you make a copy of IBM.dat called IBM_2.dat, and open that, now each of the two investments are separate and independent. They may both be tracking the security IBM, but when you record a transaction in one of the investments, it is only going to show in that one investment.
Thanks,
Mark
